love is a poor mans food.

date, or don't date. pick one.

The normal model of male-female relationships is quite simple. You are either dating or you are not dating. But the current Christian model is quite different. Our model looks like this: become friends, hang out, get to know one another, see where it goes, talk about possible getting involved, talk to someone about it, pray about it, fast over it, court (which means dating), date (which means court), and finally, date.

Instead of having or not having a romance, we add a million meaningless micro-steps which muddy the already difficult waters.

So to set the record straight you are either dating or you are not dating. Commit to one side or the other (unless you have a fear of commitment, which is a total other situation...) There is nothing overly spiritual or holy about camping somewhere between friendship and intimacy.

guarding your heart

We have grossly misinterpreted the concept of guarding our hearts. Instead of carefully defending our hearts, we have isolated them.

Instead of isolating our hearts behind ridiculous barriers that admit absolutely no one, we should protect our hearts behind reasonable defenses. But because many of us are afraid of being hurt, we have decided to build walls. No doors, no windows, no peep holes. Just walls.

"But to love at all is to be vulnerable." - CS Lewis

Our hearts weren't designed to live behind walls of fear. Our hearts were designed to face the struggles, the difficulties, and the issues of life and overcome them.

So what does it mean to guard your heart? It means you must learn to build defenses, not walls, around your heart.

If you date you may get your heart broken. But if you don't date, you may find yourself in a far more tragic position -  your heart may become unbreakable.
